Wrong Worship

Wrong Worship

There is a kind of worship that is sensual, ungodly and corrupt. This kind of worship is wrong. What makes it wrong is that it is not done in accordance to God’s way. Wrong worship is coming to God on the basis and by means of man’s ways and not God’s. Scripture is filled with examples of wrong worship. I have only selected a few examples that illustrate the corrupt practice of wrong worship.

Cain
Both Cain and Abel worshiped the Lord by means of sacrifice (Gen. 4:3-4). Despite the fact that they both offered a sacrifice to God, only Abel’s was deemed acceptable (cf. Gen. 4:4). In the eyes of man, Cain’s offering would have appeared visually acceptable and sacrificial. However, that is not what makes sacrifice or worship acceptable to God. Abel’s was received and Cain’s was rejected (Gen. 4:5) because one worshiped God according to His ordained way and the other didn’t (cf. Heb. 11:4; 12:24). Because it is not revealed in Scripture the reason why Abel’s offering was acceptable, we can only assume that the Lord had revealed the method to them prior (cf. Gen. 3:21) and by faith Abel acted on that (cf. Heb. 11:4).

Should I Take The Lord’s Supper?

Should I Take The Lord's Supper?

There is a heresy that permeates evangelical churches. It is connected to fellow heresies; legalism and works-righteousness. It is ugly, and disturbs me whenever I see it occurring in our church. It is the heresy of not taking the Lord’s Supper. (Dum dum duummmmmm.)

I have seen this heresy in all of the churches I have been a regular attendee. People (evidently) think that because they are sinners they cannot take the bread and wine. Continue reading

Bringing Back Backsliders

The Return of the Prodigal Son, 1667-1670 Bartolome esteban Murillo

What is backsliding? In his book Getting Back in the Race: A Cure for Backsliding, Joel Beeke (the modern day puritan) writes, ”Backsliding is a season of increasing sin and decreasing obedience in those who profess to be Christians”[1]. Backsliding is the dark and debilitating reality of disobedience. For some it is a season of compromise, whereas for others it is the process that begins to reveal that they are not genuinely converted. In Beeke’s excellent book, he reveals the signs of compromise: (1) coldness in prayer, (2) indifference under the word, (3) growing inner corruptions, (4) the love of the world, (5) declining love for believers, and (6) man-centered hopes (pp. 21-36). All of us battle with this and must be dealing with such practices daily by means of God’s grace.

What can we do for backsliders? At the end of his letter James writes these words,

My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins” (James 5:19-20).
