With Mother’s Day approaching, I would like to take some time to write about the precious and powerful mission of motherhood. A day in the life of a mother can be busy and bustling. The task of motherhood is a high calling but sadly many are undervaluing the value of this great status. There is an intrinsic value in motherhood because it is something God designed. This makes it a status of great worth. If you are a mum, you should prize this calling and opportunity. Understand that there is a certain dignity attached to motherhood and that you have something of far more value than the accumulating of power, prominence and possessions. You are a mum! Now add to this a mother who takes seriously her calling and strives to be a mother according to the Word of God. For a mum to take her role seriously, and see it as an opportunity from the Lord is not only pleasing to the Lord, but it is a powerful act. Sadly though, many mothers slide this opportunity aside (or at least only partly fulfill their calling) and seek to find their fulfillment in other things – power, prominence or in possessions. This is a disaster.
CHILDREN ARE A GIFT
This begins with the recognition that the child or children she has been given are a gift from the Lord. The Psalmist stated, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (). Many see children as an inconvenience or a setback. Such attitudes toward children are shameful. Children, like adults are made in the image of God. Their lives matter and are to be viewed as precious gifts from God. Whether you have one or many, each of them matters.
CHILDREN ARE TO BE TRAINED
Secondly, a godly mother understands that she has an opportunity and obligation to train them in the ways of the Lord. The virtuous woman was described as a woman who “opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue” (). This assumes that she loves the Lord and knows His Word. She takes time formally and informally to teach her children the Scriptures. Consider the influence a godly mother and grandmother had on young Timothy. Since he was an infant he had been taught the Scriptures. It was from this he learned the way of salvation (). Later in life, Timothy was granted an important charge in overseeing the church in Ephesus. During this post, he received instructions from the Apostle Paul concerning leadership and function in the church. Timothy was a man of influence, but all this began when his mum and grandmother loved him and trained him in the way of the Word. The influence of training also comes as she models to her children loving humility. All mothers – like all other people – are sinners and are constantly in need of the Lord’s grace. Even when mothers fail, they can show their children how they look to the Lord for grace and forgiveness. It is such a privilege to be able to point children to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
The mission of motherhood is a high calling. Though it will be filled with days that are rough and routine – remember how precious the gift of children are and remember the opportunity you have to show them Christ. Motherhood is precious and my hat goes off to those who take this seriously.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums out there!
